What's the difference between a stanchion base and a toe rail stanchion?
A standard stanchion base mounts flat to the deck and accepts a removeable stanchion tube. A toe rail stanchion is designed to bolt directly through the boat's toe rail, providing a lower, more integrated fitting often used on performance and racing yachts.
Should I use PVC-coated or plain stainless steel guardrail wire?
Plain 1x19 stainless steel wire is generally recommended. PVC - coated wire can trap moisture underneath the coating, accelerating hidden corrosion that's difficult to detect without removing the sleeve. Plain wire is easier to inspect and replace. Add clip on covers at key touch points to make it easier on your hands.
How far apart should stanchions be spaced?
A maximum spacing of 2.2m between stanchions is the standard guidance for yachts up to 12m, with wire of at least 4mm diameter in 1x19 316-grade stainless steel. Keeping spans as short as practically possible reduces the load on the wire and stanchion bases if someone falls against the guardrail.
